The "New" version is similar to the original one in shape and size. It has a slightly different button layout and an extra right thumbstick. 
It is also somewhat more powerful and therefore there are a small selection of 3ds games that are only compatible on the NEW handheld. This includes Xenoblade Chronicles 3ds, Minecraft 3ds, Fire Emblem Warriors, Runbow.. and about 6 others. These are all on the NEW 3DX XL 🏆.
